A WW2 RAF LANCASTER
Bomb sight Compass D
This compass is primarily designed for use in the Course-Setting Bomb Sights Mk VII A, B and C; the standard bomb sight of the mid 1930s. (The Mark VII was introduced in 1932.) Used in Hawker Bi-plane bombers, with low maximum speeds; and later probably used on the Avro Anson (188mph), the Airspeed Oxford (182mph), the Sunderland (213mph), the Battle (240 mph, max.), the Whitley (cruised at 185, top speed 220), and planes like the Vickers Stranraer and the Walrus (160 and 135, respectively). The early Wellingtons were slow at 230mph top speed, but may also have used the CSBS. Later aircraft were too fast for the speed scale on the instrument and were fitted with re-calibrated Mk.IX
