The 523rd Pioneer Bridge Battalion was established in September 1944. The battalion was formed from the 3rd Pioneer Bridge Replacement and Training Battalion with five companies as an Army unit. The battalion was deployed with the 1st Army in the Saar Palatinate.

The battalion's replacement unit was the 3rd Bridge Construction Replacement Battalion.
