The Kampfgeschwader 27 was a unit of the Wehrmacht Air Force in World War II . It was named after Oswald Boelcke , a fighter pilot in World War I. Because of this honorary name, members of the squadron were entitled to wear a sleeve stripe on their right forearm with the inscription " Geschwader Boelcke ". As a fighter squadron, equipped with Heinkel He 111 bombers , it carried out air raids with bombs on assigned targets. The squadron took part in the invasion of Poland , the Western campaign , the Battle of Britain and the German-Soviet War . From 1945 it was used in the defense of the Reich against the Western Allies. With the conversion to the Messerschmitt Bf 109K and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190A in November 1944 , the squadron's operational spectrum changed to that of a fighter squadron. After the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht on May 8, 1945, it was dissolved.
