ALBERT HELMET 1847.-1879 South Salopian Yeomanry

The Albert helmet is a metal cavalry helmet in nickle it has some historic damage it has the original lining made in white metal and brass for other ranks complete with all its fittings and surmounted with a spike from which a white hair plume is attached. Worn by the unit from 1847 until amalgamation with the North Salopian Yeomanry in 1879 when they formed Shropshire Yeomanry was formed.

The Albert helmet was developed by, and named for, Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria in 1842. It was a metal helmet based on those worn by cavalry in the Prussian Army. It was adopted by the Household Cavalry, where it replaced the bearskin-crested 1822 pattern helmet, from 1843 and by other heavy cavalry regiments from 1847
