.
The Remembrance Cross 1939-1940 of the Civil Guard of Rotterdam is a private award that was established by the Civil Guard in 1940.
The Civil Guard was only deployed to a limited extent during the fierce fighting in Rotterdam and at the Maas bridges and the bombing of Rotterdam. Only after much cesitation was a contingent of Civil Guard volunteers added to the Rotterdam Cantonment Troops. The Civil Guard of Rotterdam had a strength of 4,000 men on paper. Only a few dozen vigilantes were actually deployed and assigned in May 1940
The cross was awarded to the members of the Rotterdam Civil Guard who were under arms from August 28, 1939 to May 15, 1940. The cross was presented to the vigilantes by the commander, Lieutenant Colonel A.P.H. Boellaard. At the beginning of the occupation, the German occupier did not object to such honors.
