WW2 GERMAN BADGE FOR BLOCKADE RUNNERS

.
(Abzeichen für Blockadebrecher)
WW2 German Kriegsmarine Blockade Runners Badge with stickpin by Fec. Otto Placzek, die-struck construction in zinc and tombac. The obverse of the decoration has a burnished silver finish with nice patina. The reverse has “dish-back” surface known as variation 4 wth the makers mark “Fec. Otto Placzek Berlin Ausf. Schwerin Berlin” with a tapered vertical pin and soldered barrel hinge and hook, accompanied by a minature stickpin unmarked. The presentation case covered in blue leatherette and linned with rayon and internal grey/purple flocking base.

The decoration was instituted on 1st April 1941 upon the order of Adolf Hitler. Blockade runners were ships that attempted to break through the naval blockades imposed by the Allied forces during World War II to trade with Axis powers, particularly Germany. These operations were extremely dangerous as they involved evading naval patrols and risking attacks by enemy warships and aircraft.
